Research: Little Mix - Shout Out To My Ex - Analyisis

The music video by little mix contains many elements of media and some parts proving the music theorists point.

The music video starts with one of the stars at the front of the camera starting the song with a close up. Projecting nothing to the audience apart from herself so the audience quickly focuses on her as there is nothing else to look at, mise en scen wise the star is wearing dark make up around her eyes to instantly attract the audience and gain their attention, this is referenced to music theorist  Andrew Goodwin, with the use of make up and clothing women could be seen as a sexual object and may attract a large amount of the audience.

The music video goes on and starts to illustrate lyrics to visuals through a slow motion on a gun which says ' Over it' when the singer says "Oh forget that boy, I'm over it", this also references to Andrew Goodwin as he believes there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals which is displayed  after quick cuts to show her facial expression of not bothering with this man.

Chorus of the song and video shows the group in an open top car whilst all singing, clarifying to the audience that they all have equal times on screen and they are working as a group. this is shown through a long shot whilst tracking backwards as the car moves forwards, displaying Ann Kaplans' theory of hybrid where a video such as this can be for self advertisement but also part entertainment to gain the extra views. What else added to the entertainment value is that this song is supposedly about Perry's ex Zayn and this stirred some emotion and everyone had to check the video which was a huge market conceptual idea. Miss en scene, again these girls are dressed up in quite expensive and flashy clothing which is a common trend in the world of music video and these girls in the music video are like role models to younger women.

Technical wise, camera shots are very quick and sturdy, this relates to music theorist Carol Vernallis where she believed that the continuity in the editing focuses on what it impacts on to the audience and not so much in the right order so for example they cut back some times to when they are doing the main chorus in the car and they aren't doing anything different. Sven E Carlson believed that music videos split into 2 categories Song performance, dance performance and instrumental performance, and this video is a mixture of song and dance. There are also free hand camera movements which show a point of view from what the girls can see and gives the audience a more natural feel.

With this photo the camera movement is free hand coming from the car whilst aiming at  a man that looks like Zayn Malik (Perry's Ex)

This music video also entails a large sexual attraction towards males which grasps the eye of an ordinary male, doing so gives them more popularity and having a split target audience to being a role model and being  being seen as a sexual object where Diane Railton mentions in her book called 'Thee representations of music videos and politics' mainly in hip hop but in some cases in normal music videos women are exploited and seen as a sexual object. In the book Diane refers music videos to four different categories, Narrative, Pseudo documentary, performance and Art, this would be a pseudo documentary because it's telling us about their lives but not really.
